Why Montessori Teaches Mathematics This Way
Dr. Montessori believed that learning by manipulating objects and learning through the senses creates stronger connections in the brain.
Math gives children visual and tactile representations of the numbers they are working with. Our mathematics program begins with the identification and comparison of size using the sensorial materials. Children then learn the names and symbols of numbers, correspond the symbols to quantities, and subsequently count into the thousands. Children add and subtract, skip-count for multiplication, and perform simple division. Geometry and fractions are introduced from an early age.
